MAX KLEIN BIBLE MINISTRIES

A Christmas Message

Written by: Max Klein

Let us bow our heads; If we need to use the Recovery Procedure as found in 1 John 1:9, let us do so at this time that we might be in fellowship. (pause) Father, we thank you for the privilege and opportunity to study your word and for the freedom that you have provided for us here in Corpus Christi, Texas, U.S.A.; furthermore, we express our appreciation to God the Holy Spirit who will enlighten us regarding the message this morning. We as priests pray this through the person of our Lord Christ Jesus, our High Priest, Amen.

The Birth of Jesus in Bethlehem, Judea (Luke 2:1-20)

Events leading up to His birth: Luke 1:26-38, “Now in the sixth month, the angel, Gabriel was sent from God to a city in Galilee called Nazareth, (27) to a virgin contractually married to a man whose name was Joseph, of the descendants of David; and the virgin’s name was Mary. (28) And coming in, he, Gabriel said to her, “Rejoice, one who has been graciously bestowed on! The Lord is with you, (29) but she was very perplexed at this statement, and kept pondering what kind of salutation this was. (30) The angel said to her, “Stop being afraid, Mary; for you have found grace with God [in a special way], (31) ‘and behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name Him, Jesus. (32) He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most-High, and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father, David; (33) and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom [the Millennial Kingdom followed by the Eternal Kingsom] will have no end’ (34) Mary said to the angel, how can this be, since I have not had intercourse with a man [since I am a virgin]? (35) The angel answered and said to her, ‘The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the highest [the power of the Holy Spirit] will overshadow you [provide 23 male chromosomes] for your advantage; and so that which has been sired [the zygote] is set apart [in the neuter] and He will be called the Son of God [after birth at the Incarnation]. (36) And behold, even your relative Elizabeth has also conceived [has become pregnant] in her old age; and she who was called barren is now in her sixth month. (37) For nothing will be impossible with God.’ (38) And Mary said, ‘Behold, the bondslave of the Lord; may it be done to me according to your word.’ And the angel [Gabriel] departed from her.”

Freedom through military victory is so important that God decided that the humanity of Christ would be born on December 25 which corresponds with the 25th of Kislev which is the Jewish 4th of July. This Feast of Hanukkah, the Feast of Lights celebrates the Maccabean revolt and defeat of the Greek, Antiochus IV of the Seleucid Empire.

The Maccabean revolt was initiated by Mattathias, a Jewish priest, a Hasmonean from the small town of Modin in 167 BC. Being quite old, he died shortly after the revolt. However, his third son Judah Hasmonean later nicknamed, Maccabeus meaning the hammer for he smashed the enemy like a hammer smashes to pieces whatever it strikes. The recapture of Jerusalem in 164 BC from the armies of Antiochus IV was a great victory followed by the subsequent cleansing of the Temple and the rededication of the altar on the 25th of Kislev [December].

Now let’s look at the passage dealing with the birth of Jesus as found in Luke 2:1-20.

Luke 2:1 Now in those days, a decree went out from Caesar Augustus, that a census be taken of all the inhabitants [of the Roman Empire].

Luke 2:2 This was the first census taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria.

Luke 2:3 And everyone was on his way to register for the census, each to his own city.

Luke 2:4 Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David [and that is where his family records would be],

Luke 2:5 in order to register along with Mary, who was contractually married to him [marriage had not yet been consummated] and was pregnant [with the fetus of the humanity Christ].

Luke 2:6 While they were there, the days were completed for her to give birth.

Luke 2:7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son; and she wrapped Him in death-cloths [cloth used for burial] and laid Him in a manger [Isaiah 1:3], because there was no room for them in the inn [due to the Feast of Hanukkah and the census].

Hebrews 10:5-7, “Therefore, when he [the humanity of Christ] entered into the world, He said, You, [ God the Father] do not desire sacrifice and offering, but you have prepared for me a [human] body [a quote from Psalm 40:6-8]. (6) You have not been propitiated by whole burnt offerings and sacrifice for sins. (7) At that time [in a feed trough] I said, Behold, I [a reference to the humanity of Christ] have arrived (in a scroll of a book it stands written concerning me) to accomplish your will O’ God.”

The humanity of Christ magnified God the Father’s word above his own person starting at His birth and continuing throughout His life.

Hebrews 10:7b, “Behold, I have arrived . . . to accomplish your will O’ God.”

1. Matthew 4:4b, “The Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word which proceeds through the mouth of God [the Father].”

2. Matthew 26:39b, “My father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me, yet not as I will, but as you [will].”

Luke 2:8 In the same region [the region around Bethlehem where David tended his flocks], there were shepherds living out in the fields and guarding the flock by night [some guarded by day; others by night].

These lambs were used as animal sacrifices in the Temple in Jerusalem according to the Mishnah. These were lambs without spot and blemish.  Also, according to the Mishnah, these same shepherds were ostracized by the Scribes, Pharisees and priests since they were not able to attend the ritual worship occurring in the Temple. Even so, these shepherds were invited to attend the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem. Though the religious crowd ostracized the shepherds, the Lord honored them.

Why were they given this special honor? They were the handful of mature believers who preserved Judea as the client nation during this time of apostacy. Without them, there would not have been a nation in which the humanity of Christ could be born.

Luke 2:9 And an angel of the Lord [Gabriel as the angelic herald] suddenly stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them; and they were terribly frightened.

Luke 2:10 But the angel said to them, “Stop being afraid [one cannot think under fear]; for behold, I bring you good news of great happiness which will be for all the people [who believe and advance spiritually];

Only mature believers have the capacity to experience this happiness (sharing the happiness of God).  James 1:12, “Happy is the honorable man [the mature believer] who endures testing [Providential Preventive Suffering; Momentum Testing and Evidence Testing] because having become approved [at the Evaluation Throne of Christ], he will receive the wreath of Life which He promised to those who love Him.”

I wish you, mature believers a happy Christmas season because I know that you have the capacity. For the rest of you, even though you will try to eke out some happiness from all of your partying and feasting, you will find out that delicious food and lovely people cannot make you happy. Please, do not misunderstand this. There is nothing wrong with partying and feasting as such as long as your happiness is not dependent upon the festivities but related to your relationship with the members of the Godhead.

Luke 2:11 for today in the city of David [Bethlehem] a Savior [the humanity of Christ] has been born to you [for your advantage], who is Christ the Lord.

Savior is emphasized since the cross must come before the crown. His work on the cross must come before his rulership in the Millennium. In order to be a savior, he needed to be a mediator.  In order to be a mediator, there had to be an incarnation. This incarnation took place in Bethlehem of Judea. As soon as his physical birth took place as prophesied in Micah 5:2, God the Son united with the humanity of Jesus. Specifically, when the placenta cord was severed (severing mother-dependance), God created soul-life and imputed it to this biological life resulting in human life. Simultaneously, with the occurrence of human life, the deity of God the Son united with this human being. This we refer to as His incarnation which carnation resulted in his hypostatic union.

Luke 2:12 “This will be a sign for you [the shepherds]: you will find a baby wrapped in death-cloths [used to wrap a corpse] and lying in a manger.”

The sign of the Messiah is that He would be wrapped in death-cloth foretelling the cross and lying in a feeding trough, a fulfillment of prophesy. Isaiah 1:3, “An ox knows its owner, and a donkey, its master’s manger, but Israel does not know [the Lord]; my people do not understand [where to find Messiah].” Both the ox and the jackass are smarter than Jewish religious people of the Lord’s 1st Advent!

Luke 2:13 And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly army praising God and saying,

Luke 2:14 “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth prosperity among men with whom He is pleased [the advanced believer].”

Luke 2:15 When the angels had gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds began saying to one another, “Let us go straight to Bethlehem then, and see this thing that has happened which the Lord [via the angel] has made known to us.”

Luke 2:16 So, they came in a hurry and found their way to Mary and Joseph, and the baby as He lay in the manger.

Luke 2:17 When they had seen this, they made known the statement which had been told them about this Child.

After leaving Mary, Joseph and the newborn Jesus, the Shepherds told this story and in so doing evangelized many.

Luke 2:18 And all who heard it wondered at the things which were told them by the shepherds.

They wondered, was this the Messiah as prophesied in the Old Testament?

Luke 2:19 But Mary treasured all these things, pondering them in her heart.

Mary celebrated Christmas correctly by placing the highest value on knowledge of Christ and pondering this information over and over again in her soul.

Luke 2:20 The shepherds [with great capacity to appreciate this most important event in history, the birth of the humanity of Christ leading to his work on the cross] went back, glorifying and praising God for all that they had heard and seen, just as had been told them.

Isaiah: 53:2-3, 6-9, “For He grew up like a sucker-shoot [draws nourishment from its own plant namely the proto-type spiritual life] before Him [God the Father], and like a root shoot out of parched ground [Israel dried up from legalism in the Lord’s Day], He had neither ostentatious nor majestic appearance that we should stare at Him, therefore, no appearance by which we should be attracted to him. (3). Despised [hated by the Jewish religious unbelievers] and forsaken [by his loved ones] by men, a man of adversities [sorrows, pressures and pain] and knowing catastrophe [mental anguish from seeing an entire generation rejecting the gospel]; And like one from whom men hide their face [like a leper: Leviticus 13:45, 46], He was despised, and we did not esteem Him. (6).  All of us [the human race] like sheep have gone astray; each one has turned [free will] to his own way [not God’s way], therefore, the Lord [God the Father] has caused to fall upon Him [Jesus Christ] the iniquity [punishment for our guilt] of us all. (7). He was oppressed [abused, harassed: Satanic pressure via demons and human agents] and he was afflicted [every attempt to frustrate the cross: the abuse, slugging, scourging etc.], yet he did not open his mouth. Like a lamb that is led to slaughter, and like a ewe-sheep that is silent before its shearers, so he did not open his mouth [he never lost his poise]. (8). By oppression [Jewish law] and by judgment [Roman Law: oppression and judgment, a reference to his trials] he was taken away [prior to the cross] and as for his generation who considered [and pondered: thoughtful consideration] that he was cut off out of the land [of Judea] of the living because of the transgressions of my people to whom the stroke of judgment fell [was due; a reference to God the Father’s judgment of Christ]? (9). While his burial was assigned with criminals [normally would have been buried with these criminals] yet he would be associated with a rich man in his death because he had done no wrong [of any kind with emphasis on overt sins] nor was there any deceit in his mouth [never told a lie, never maligned or judged; emphasis on mental and sins of the tongue].”

Though Christmas is a time to be with our friends and family, the emphasis should be focused on our mediator and savior. So, we are not to become so busy partying and celebrating that we ignore the true meaning of Christmas.
