MAX KLEIN BIBLE MINISTRIES

Romans Chapter Ten

A verse-by-verse commentary by Max Klein

The purpose of the dispensation of Israel, the dispensation prior to the dispensation of the Great Power Experiment of the Hypostatic Union, was fourfold. First of all, it was to establish Israel as a client nation to God and therefore to introduce the Laws of Divine Establishment not only for Israel but for all nations and to demonstrate how freedom exists within a national entity. Secondly, it was to provide a base for the formation of the canon of scripture. The Old Testament, of course, was written in the nation of Israel and the New Testament writers were all Jewish, with two possible exceptions, thirdly, to establish a basis for the first and second advents of Christ. Christ is to come each time for the purpose of relating to Israel. He came the first time as the son of David, the rightful ruler of Israel, but He first had to fulfill Genesis 3:15. He had to first fulfill his role as mediator and high priest. As mediator to reconcile mankind to God and as high priest to offer himself as a sacrifice on the cross for the sins of the world. This of course, was rejected by Israel as per Romans 10:1-10. He will come the second time as the son of David and as the God-Man will be accepted to re-establish Israel as a client nation to God forever, fulfilling the unconditional covenants. The fourth purpose was to establish a policy of God toward man. Israel, then, becomes the photograph of God’s dealing with man and God’s relationship with him.

Romans 10:1-10: Paul explained the gospel to Jewish unbelievers:

Some Christians think that the unbeliever must both confess Christ publicly and then believe in Jesus Christ. This comes from their false interpretation of Romans 10.  Actually, Paul is teaching just the opposite.

In this passage, Paul is explaining the gospel to his brethren, the Jews (Romans 10:1, 2).  In doing so, Paul explains the difference between the ritual of publicly quoting the Word in their worship service and the actual believing in the Lord Jesus Christ.  Paul makes it very clear that the ritual of quoting Scripture must come after salvation if it is to be a part of a worship service, not before (verse 10).  He has to explain this because many Jews thought they were saved by participating in the Jewish worship service.

Ritual worship included quoting Deuteronomy 6:4. “Listen, O Israel.  The Lord [Jehovah] is our God [Elohim]; the Lord is unique [for he is the God-Man]”. This verse has been a part of Israel’s ritual starting shortly after 1441 B.C.  Even today, every time there is a meeting in the synagogue, this verse is usually quoted aloud as a part of their ritual.  Therefore, for nearly 3500 years this verse has been used by Jewish people in worship.  This ritual was designed to remind the Jews of the source of their salvation which is Jesus Christ, not as a means of salvation.

Only if the Jewish unbeliever understands Deuteronomy 6:4, can he benefit from it. The Jewish person has to understand that the expression “Lord is our God; the Lord is unique” is a reference to the Lord Jesus Christ.  Then, after understanding this, he must believe in the Lord Jesus Christ.  If the unbelieving Jew should quote Deuteronomy 6:4 publicly out-loud, but does not believe in Jesus Christ, it would be meaningless.  It is ritual without reality.  It is like listening to the gospel message, but not believing in Christ.

In order to understand Deuteronomy 6:4, we must understand the difference between the words “Lord” and “God.”  The Hebrew word “Jehovah is equivalent to the Greek “Kurios” and both are translated into English as “Lord.”  The Hebrew word “Elohim” is equivalent to the Greek “Theos” and both are translated as “God.”  The Scripture clearly states that God is one “there is no God [theos], except one” (1 Corinthians 8:4).  There is only one God in essence (Galatians 3:20; James 2:19; John 10:30).

As we know there is one God in essence, but three persons of the Godhead.  The Hebrew word “Jehovah” which is equivalent to the Greek “Kurios” refers to the persons of the Godhead. Since there are three persons of the Godhead, the word “Jehovah” cannot be translated “one”.  Furthermore, this explains such verses as Psalm 110:1 where Jehovah, the Father is speaking to the Son of God. “The Lord [Jehovah a reference to God the Father] said to my [David’s] Lord . . .”

Therefore, since there are three persons of the Godhead, the Hebrew word ‘ekhad’ in Deuteronomy 6:4 should not be translated “one,” but adverbially as ‘unique.’   Jesus Christ is unique; he is the only God-Man.  This also explains why Deuteronomy 6:4 was made a part of the Jewish worship service.  The Jewish believers who loved the Lord Jesus Christ loved to quote this verse in their worship service in honor of Him.

Romans 10:1

Brethren, the motivation [desire] of my heart and my prayer to God [the Father] on behalf of them [unsaved Israel] is for their salvation.

Ἀδελφοί, ἡ µὲν εὐδοκία τῆς ἐµῆς καρδίας καὶ ἡ δέησις πρὸς τὸν θεὸν ὑπὲρ αὐτῶν εἰς σωτηρίαν.

Paul has a tremendous tenderness of soul for those who are not saved.  Paul recognizing that prayer cannot coerce or overcome the freewill of anyone does not ask the Father that his brethren be saved, rather Paul’s prayer to the Father expresses his volition and desire, not the volition of the people for whom he is praying.

In this passage, verses 1-10, Paul is evangelizing his brethren, the Jews by quoting pertinent passages of the Old Testament.  This passage was not written to evangelize the gentiles.

Romans 10:2

For I testify regarding them that they [Jewish unbelievers] have a zeal for God, but not as a result of knowledge [Their zeal is not based on true information, but emotion and the distortion of the Mosaic Law].

µαρτυρῶ γὰρ αὐτοῖς ὅτι ζῆλον θεοῦ ἔχουσιν, ἀλλ’ οὐ κατ’ ἐπίγνωσιν·

They have a zeal for God:

1. This zeal for God is related to their rejection of Jesus Christ as savior based on their arrogance and self-righteousness for religious zeal is simply arrogance plus self-righteousness. Religious zeal motivated the Jews to seek salvation through keeping the law.

2. Righteousness manufactured from religious zeal and human arrogance can never replace the possession of God’s perfect and eternal righteousness which comes through faith in Christ.

3. Arrogance is amplified into zeal. Zeal manufactured from self-righteousness or works-righteousness is always in direct conflict with the grace policy of God. Therefore, arrogant self-righteousness is always disassociated and disoriented from the plan of God.

4. Relationship between God and man is distorted and destroyed by any arrogance in the soul of anyone, but especially by the presence of arrogance and self-righteousness. The humility of man orients to God’s righteousness while the arrogance of man orients to self-righteousness.

5. Believing in the Lord Jesus Christ is the unbeliever’s only true act of humility. Self-righteousness is so self-centered and so arrogant as to reject God’s righteousness through faith in Christ.

True zeal for God:

1. True zeal for God cannot exist apart from knowledge of doctrine. Knowledge of doctrine cannot exist apart from faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

2. Faith in Christ results in the provision of logistical grace whereby the positive believer in Christ can perceive doctrine.

3. Religious zeal for God produces tyrants while doctrinal zeal for God produces impersonal love for all.

4. True zeal is the momentum and the motivation for the plan of God. The believer who has doctrine begins to understand the plan of God and therefore perpetuates his momentum through that understanding.

5. Therefore, there is a conflict between ignorant zeal and cognizant zeal, between arrogant zeal and humble zeal.

6. The understanding and appreciation for the imputation of divine righteousness results in humility-orientation. The striving for and the development of self-righteousness results in arrogant inflexibility, legalism, and mental blindness toward doctrine.

Romans 10:3

For not knowing the righteousness of God [imputed righteousness], and by seeking to establish their own [righteousness through the Mosaic Law], they have not been obedient to the righteousness of God [not received imputed righteousness through faith in Christ].

Self-righteousness versus imputed righteousness:

1. Self-righteousness is excluded from all phases of the plan of God. Self-righteousness is the basic overt manifestation of human arrogance.

2. Imputed righteousness and self-righteousness are mutually exclusive. Self-righteousness brings cursing from the justice of God while the imputed righteousness of God is the source of blessing from the justice of God.

3. When the Mosaic Law is distorted, it produces a self-righteousness which is hostile to God’s grace plan of providing imputed righteousness.

4. The true purpose of the Mosaic Law was to show that man was a sinner and needed imputed righteousness in order to establish a relationship with God.

5. Galatians 3:24, “Wherefore, the Law was our school bus [pedagogue] to lead us unto Christ, that we might be justified by means of faith.” Codex 1 of the Mosaic law demonstrates that man is a sinner and needs a savior. It also defines freedom in terms of morality. Codex 2 of the Mosaic Law reveals Christ as the only savior, and therefore the Law is a school bus, a pedagogue, leading us to Christ.” (By the way, a pedagogue was never a teacher in the school, a pedagogue was the Greek slave that acted as a body guard for the children, taking them to and from school so that they would not be kidnapped or harmed.)

Imputed righteousness as it relates to both the unbeliever and believer:

Imputed righteousness at salvation is the beginning of blessing from God. It also can be very dangerous because if you try to compete with the righteousness of God resident in you by arrogant self-righteousness then you are in for a life of terrible discipline, and you are going to fail in the purpose for which God supports you and sustains you under logistical grace. You see, God found a way to bless mankind without compromising His essence, and that is through the imputation of divine righteousness. Mankind often concludes that his self-righteousness pleases God but that is not true. ‘All of our righteousnesses are as filthy rags in His sight’ as per Isaiah 64:6. Neither man’s sinfulness nor man’s self-righteousness advances the glory of God. Only God can glorify God; divine integrity advances the glory of God, and one half of divine integrity resides in us as of the moment we believe in Christ. In other words, only what God has provided for man in grace can glorify God. Any member of the human race who ignores his personal sins as a manifestation of spiritual death and at the same time presents his self-righteousness to God for salvation has neither respect nor awe for the integrity of God. So, maladjustment to the integrity of God at salvation means that there is no relationship with the integrity of God, no eternal life, no imputation of God’s righteousness. Therefore, the integrity of God, can only condemn the unbeliever.

Furthermore, no nation can possess freedom, prosperity and blessing apart from the integrity of God. That means that social, economic and political reform apart from the integrity of God is useless.

“For not knowing the righteousness of God.”

1. It refers to divine righteousness imputed namely one half of divine integrity imputed to the person at the moment of salvation.

2. The Jewish unbeliever is ignorant with guilt because these Jews had every opportunity to know and to understand the issue of justification namely imputation of divine righteousness at the moment of faith in Christ.

3. These Jews by defending their self-righteousness by keeping the Law have rejected the righteousness of God through faith in Christ.

4. In their arrogance, they established an imaginary orthodoxy which does not exist in the plan of God, but in their evil and arrogant imagination, it is real.

5. They have excluded Christ, the basis for the imputation of divine righteousness from their imaginary system of orthodoxy, and as a result of this, they have maligned Him with blasphemy and rejection.

6. This arrogant self-righteousness from their distortion of the Mosaic Law motivated Jewish participation in the crucifixion of our Lord.

7. Such arrogance and self-righteousness were the basis of Jewish persecution of Christianity in Paul’s time. Paul himself was under constant pressure from his Jewish brethren.

8. Where arrogance exists, there is always self-righteousness. This self-righteousness is divorced from reality and gathers momentum in zeal; zeal to destroy those who know the truth, witness to the truth, communicate the truth.

9. Arrogance always chooses personal righteousness namely self-righteousness over the righteousness which comes from God’s plan.

10. Arrogance approves of self-works and rejects the work of God, known to us under the title “grace.”

11. Arrogance is the vacuum of the soul which sucks in every false doctrine, every evil thought, accepting the false as true and accepting the true as false.

12. It is therefore, inevitable that rejection of God’s imputed righteousness through faith in Christ will be replaced with arrogant self-righteousness.

13. Self-righteousness is a curse to the possessor. For the unbeliever, an eternal curse that is the lake of fire; for the believer, the source of divine discipline in time, loss of special blessing in time, and loss of eternal rewards.

By application to the Christian:

1. While this passage pertains to the Jewish unbeliever in Paul’s time, the same conflict of self-righteousness versus divine righteousness exists in the realm of Christianity right now.

2. The issue, therefore, has application to us. Whose righteousness are you building your life on? You can be allegedly positive toward doctrine or negative toward doctrine and be building on your own righteousness, but you can only be truly positive toward doctrine when you are building on the righteousness of God. It is a matter of ignorance versus cognizance of the doctrine of imputation or justification.

3. In this context, the unbeliever who rejects the gospel seeks to establish his own righteousness as the means of salvation. One of the most common systems of establishing one’s own righteousness is to say no to the gospel. That means you have rejected the work of Christ on the cross as the way of salvation, and once you say no to that, you must link up your own self-righteousness with some system. This is what man inevitably does, and for the Jew he had the Law. So, he reached out and said he would keep the Law as a means of obtaining a relationship with God.

4. The believer in Christ who rejects Bible doctrine and Bible teaching always seeks to establish his own righteousness. So, when a person rejects the truth, either at the point of the gospel hearing or after they are saved, it is inevitable that they will seek to establish their own righteousness.

5. The imputed righteousness of God is the only true foundation for the Christian way of life. Again, even our life support system under logistical blessing is based on the integrity of God.

6. The imputed righteousness of God is the home or target for the imputation of logistical blessing and, if we should crack the maturity barrier, the Lord imputes special blessings namely Escrow Blessings to the righteousness which we share in union with Him.

Romans 10:4

For Christ is the end of the Law [Jesus Christ fulfilled the Law which qualified him for the cross which work on the cross ultimately brought an end to the Mosaic Law. The Christian is under a higher law namely the information found in Acts and the epistles of the New Testament as learned through the Filling of the Spirit] resulting in righteousness to anyone who believes.

τέλος γὰρ νόµου Χριστὸς εἰς δικαιοσύνην παντὶ τῷ πιστεύοντι.

After our Lord died physically on the cross, He was three days in the grave, and then resurrected.  After spending 40 days on the earth, He ascended, and He was seated at the right hand of the Father. By being seated at the right hand of the Father, the Mosaic Law was brought to a close. The Age of Israel, which was not completed as yet, was interrupted, and the Church Age was intercalated. So, when the Church Age began on the Day of Pentecost in 30 A.D., that was the end of the function of the Mosaic Law as a ritual form of worship.  Then, 40 years after the Church Age began, Judea as a Jewish Client Nation was destroyed. From that time until the 2nd Advent, we live in the ‘Times of the Gentiles’ in which no Jewish nation is recognized by God as a client nation. Luke 22:24, “and they will fall by the edge of the sword [during the siege of Jerusalem in 70 A.D. when 1.9 million Jews were killed], and will be led captive into all the nations [97 thousand]; and Jerusalem will be trampled underfoot by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.” This will continue until the end of the Tribulation when Israel will be restored to their client nation status and the four unconditional covenants to Israel will be fulfilled.

Implication for the believer in Christ:

1. Because the individual believer in Christ receives the imputation of divine righteousness at salvation, it provides instant justification and perpetual motivation for advancing to spiritual maturity through maximum doctrine resident in the soul.

2. The conflict between self-righteousness and imputed righteousness is terminated at salvation when you believe in Christ as per God’s plan.

3. The imputation of divine righteousness at the moment of faith in Christ once and for all should preclude any system of self-righteousness or pseudo spirituality.

4. Christian legalism is the arrogance of ignorance namely the failure to understand the implications of the imputed righteousness of God.

5. No man can establish two conflicting systems of righteousness. He must accept one or the other, either self-righteousness or imputed divine righteousness.

6. For the believer to establish self-righteousness for his spiritual life is the arrogance of legalism.

7. For the believer to establish imputed righteousness for his spiritual life is humble grace orientation and accurate orientation to God’s plan.

8. The power of thought exceeds the power of deeds. The deed only has merit as it relates to the thought.

9. Bible doctrine resident in the soul is the thought which motivates compliance with the plan of God and a grace orientation to life.

10. Grace excludes any system of self-righteousness as a basis of merit or blessing from God.

11. You can only build on the foundation of imputed righteousness and the building must be perception of doctrine.

12. Therefore, the conflict of self-righteousness versus divine righteousness imputed existed in the previous dispensation of Israel as a definite stumbling block to the Jew.

Romans 10:5

For Moses wrote [Leviticus 18:5] about the righteousness which is by means of the Law, "The man who has executed [this righteousness by keeping the mandates of the Law] shall live by it" [When a citizen obeys God’s laws regarding individual responsibility, marriage, family and nation, he acquires a moral righteousness which is beneficial. However, that same person should not use this righteousness as a means of gaining salvation.]

Μωϋσῆς γὰρ γράφει τὴν δικαιοσύνην τὴν ἐκ τοῦ νόµου ὅτι ὁ ποιήσας ἄνθρωπος ζήσεται ἐν αὐτῇ.

Leviticus 18:1-6, “Then Jehovah spoke to Moses, saying, (2) Speak to the people of Israel, and say to them, I am the Lord your God. (3) You shall not do what you have done in the land of Egypt [practiced idolatry], where you lived; nor are you to do what is done in the land of Canaan [where they practiced idolatry], where I am bringing you; you shall not walk in their statutes. (4) You are to perform my judgments [Codex 3], and keep my statutes, to walk in them: I am the Lord your God. (5) So, you shall keep my statutes, and my judgements which the man who does them, also shall live by them [Codex1 and Codex 3]: I am Jehovah.” (6) None of you shall approach any blood relative of his, to uncover his nakedness: I am the Lord.”

1. The Jews avoided incest and sexual abuses and concluded from this establishment morality that their self-righteousness was worthy of salvation.

2. Such a blasphemous conclusion violates the entire purpose of the passage. Morality is designed for the client nation unbeliever and believer alike.

3. Leviticus 18 refers to lifestyle, not salvation. Lifestyle is not the basis for salvation. No lifestyle, including semi-perfection, can open the gates of heaven; they have been opened by the work of the Lord Jesus Christ in being judged for our sins on the cross.

4. Arrogance distorts lifestyle into a way of salvation and sets up the principle of competition namely human righteousness versus God’s righteousness. Doing is a lifestyle; believing in Christ is salvation.

5. It is imperative in understanding this passage to rightly divide the Word of truth. Do not confuse lifestyle with salvation. Doing is simply living by the Laws of Establishment in a client nation as per Romans 13:1-7.

6.  Morality is a lifestyle, not a way of salvation. To distort morality into a way of salvation is both blasphemous and disastrous.

7. Codex 3 of the Mosaic Law requires morality as a lifestyle but it never requires morality as a way of salvation.  Furthermore, it is a lifestyle for both believer and unbeliever in the client nation.

8. Lifestyle has nothing whatever to do with salvation. Salvation was started and completed at the cross. Salvation is the work of Jesus Christ, not the work of mankind in a client nation. Though we should be moral, salvation does not depend upon morality, it depends upon faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

9.  Morality belongs to the entire human race; it is not the monopoly of the believer. Therefore, morality can neither be the way of salvation nor the way of spirituality. Salvation is instant relationship with God; spirituality is the ministry of the Holy Spirit in sync with metabolized doctrine in the soul.

10. This does not imply that Christianity is immoral or antinomian but simply anything the unbeliever can do is not the Christian way of life.

11. Christianity includes morality but at the same time exceeds morality, both in the way of salvation and in the dynamics of the filling of the Spirit after salvation.

12. While morality sponsors human freedom to the believer in Christ, morality in itself is neither salvation nor spirituality. Hell will be filled with very moral people whose satisfaction with their own self or works-righteousness motivated them in arrogance to reject the offer of the righteousness of God through faith in Christ.

By definition, morality is right conduct and excellence in the practice of establishment. It pertains to the character, the conduct, the ethics, the motivation and integrity related to the Laws of Divine Establishment. Morality is the doctrine of duty and responsibility of all adult members of the human race regarding establishment principles. This means, of course, that morality is a part of Christianity, but morality is also a part of being an unbeliever. Christianity is not a morality; it is a relationship with God as per 2 Corinthians 5:17. The believer is a new creature because he is “in Christ.” The relationship of Christianity is described, then, in terms of positional sanctification which means that morality is not Christianity, it is a by-product of any adult person under establishment, believer or unbeliever. The plan of God does not give the believer licence to sin, nor does the Bible condone antinomianism. Nevertheless, morality has no spiritual dynamics as far as the Christian way of life is concerned. Anything the unbeliever can do is not the Christian way of life. Since the unbeliever can be, and often is moral, so should the Christian be moral. However, in the Christian way of life morality is the result, not the means, of living the Christian life. So, the true dynamics of Christianity is in the mechanics of experiential sanctification which is the filling of the Spirit plus perception of doctrine. So, Christian dynamics not only includes morality, it exceeds it.

Romans 10:6

But the righteousness which is by means of faith communicates in this manner, "Do not think in your heart [your soul] [quote from Deuteronomy 9:4], 'who shall ascend to heaven that is to bring Christ down [He doesn’t have to come down] [Deuteronomy 30:12],’

Moses recognized the Jewish tendency toward arrogant self-righteousness when he stated in Deuteronomy 9:4-6, "Do not say in your heart when the Lord your God had driven them out before you, saying, Because of my righteousness [great experiential righteousness] the Lord has brought me in to possess this land; but it is because of the wickedness of these nations that the Lord is dispossessing them before you. (5) It is not for your righteousness, or for the uprightness of your heart that you are going to possess their land, but it is for the wickedness of these nations that the Lord your God is driving them out before you in order to confirm the oath which the Lord swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. (6) Know then, it is not because of your self-righteousness that the Lord your God is giving you this good land to possess, for you are a stubborn people.”

In Romans 10, Paul quotes from Deuteronomy 30:10-14, “If you hear the Lord, your God [the Jews listening to Deuteronomy 6:4 in their worship service] to keep His commandments and His statutes which are written in this book of the Law, if you turn to the Lord, your God [change your thinking about Christ] with all your heart and soul [faith in Jesus Christ] (11) For this commandment which I command you today is not too difficult for you, nor is it [salvation] out of reach.  (12) It is not in heaven, that you should say, ‘who will go up to heaven for us to get it [the instructions regarding salvation] for us and make us hear it that we may do it [The Jews always wanted to do something for salvation]?’ (13) Nor is it [salvation] beyond the sea [the Mediterranean Sea] that you should say, ‘Who will cross the sea for us to get it [instructions regarding salvation] for us and make us hear it that we may do it?’ (14) But the word [gospel] is very near you, in your mouth [The unbelieving Jews heard about the Savior every time they quoted Deuteronomy 6:4] and in your heart [they had memorized the gospel message] so that you can do it [having believed in Christ you can enter into worshipping the Lord]”

Romans 10:7

Or who shall descend into the abyss [Sheol or Hades]? That is, to bring Christ up again from the dead. [This is a reference to Christ’s descent into Hades for three days after his physical death as per Acts 2:27, 31 and Ephesians 4:9, 10].

ἤ, Τίς καταβήσεται εἰς τὴν ἄβυσσον; τοῦτ’ ἔστιν Χριστὸν ἐκ νεκρῶν ἀναγαγεῖν.

Acts 2:27, 31“Because you will not abandon my soul to Hades, nor allow your Holy One to undergo decay. (31) he looked ahead and spoke of the resurrection of the Christ that He was neither abandoned to Hades nor did His flesh suffer decay.” Ephesians 4:9-10, “(Now this expression, "He ascended," what does it mean except that He also had descended into the lower parts of the earth? (10) He who descended is Himself also He who ascended far above all the heavens, so that He might fulfill all things.)”

Paul makes a direct quotation using heaven as the same illustration as Moses, but in quoting Deuteronomy 30:13 in Romans 10:7, Paul will change the illustration from going across the sea to descending into Hades. In doing so, Paul retains the Mosaic principle of salvation being available, but he changes the illustration of Moses from across the sea, namely the Mediterranean to a more pertinent illustration namely Hades Paul amplified the passage in Deuteronomy from the viewpoint of the First Advent of Christ. Paul wanted the Jews to relate salvation to the substitutionary spiritual death, physical death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ. The soul of Jesus went into Hades after His physical death. Heaven and Hades are in contrast in Paul’s use of the Mosaic passage. Paul changed the analogy because the contemporary Jews, the Jews of Paul’s day, had blotted out of their minds the 1st Advent of Christ, His work on the cross, and His unique death. Moses talked about salvation not being over the sea, but Paul cannot use that analogy in relationship to the 1st Advent because Christ in resurrection did not come from across the sea. In resurrection Christ came out of Hades (Sheol).

Paul not only quotes Moses in Deuteronomy but adds the implications of the 1st advent, being even stronger than Moses on how close and near salvation is to every Jew.  Salvation is as close as the Jewish mouth and mind and but even more so since the 1st Advent was historical in Paul’s day. Moses and Paul say the same thing namely since salvation is not in heaven, it is attainable. Since salvation is not over the sea or in Hades, it is available. However, salvation is as far away as heaven or Hades (Sheol) to the person who is arrogant and wants to work for salvation.

Though the Jews have kept the ritual of the Mosaic Law, they have rejected the reality. The Jews have not only have rejected Christ as Savior but also the 1st Advent, and His fulfilment on the cross of Codex 2 of the Mosaic Law. In the time of Moses, they ignored the First Advent of Christ as a prophetic doctrine. They ignored it by accepting the ritual of the animal sacrifices which taught it but rejected the reality of it. They also rejected the doctrinal implication of the modus operandi of the Levitical priest. The Jewish problem in the time of Paul, and still is, is to ignore the 1st Advent of Christ by blotting out that point of history and substituting their own righteousness.

Romans 10:8

But what does it say [the Old Testament state in Deuteronomy 30:14 regarding salvation] "The message [the gospel] is near you, in your mouth [Jewish ritual of repeating the gospel message in their worship service] and in your right lobe [they had memorized this and other gospel verses through repetition] that is the message of faith which we publicly proclaim [as heralds].

Romans 10:9

That if [3rd class] you [Jewish believers and unbelievers] acknowledge with your mouth Jesus as Lord [Many Jews mostly unbelievers have and will participate in the ritual of quoting or listening to Deuteronomy 6:4 in their worship service. This would be like quoting John 3:16 or reading it from some billboard. Though this is not a part of salvation, God may use this information at some point in one’s life.], and if you should believe [in the Greek, the Constative Aorist Tense is for a moment of time] in your heart [the stream of consciousness: the location of faith] that the God [the Father] has raised Him [Jesus Christ] from the dead [a part of the gospel], you will be saved [gnomic future].

The Greek word ‘homologeo’ means to acknowledge.  It refers to every time a Jewish person in a synagogue repeats the words stated by the Rabbi.   If he is a believer and in fellowship, it is worship. However, if he is an unbeliever, it is meaningless unless he believes in the Lord Jesus Christ. Acknowledging Christ publicly as the Jews do in their ritual service does not save.

Many Jews in the Old Testament-period remained as unbelievers because they embraced the ritual, but they did not believe in Jesus Christ (Adonai Elohim) as their savior.  The same thing is true today. Many present-day Jews participate in the ritual, but they do not believe in Jesus Christ.  This is why it is very important for Jewish unbelievers to understand that no one is ever saved by ritual.

So, Paul is showing the unbeliever that if he quotes Deuteronomy 6:4, and if it leads to his understanding of the gospel, it is okay, but it must be followed by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.  Salvation itself is a function of the mentality and volition of the soul.

Romans 10:10

For in the heart [the soulish pump], it [the gospel] is believed resulting in [imputed] righteousness then [after salvation] with the mouth it [salvation] is acknowledged [Jews acknowledging Christ as Lord like in their ritual of quoting Deuteronomy 6:4] because [the accusative of cause] of salvation.

καρδίᾳ γὰρ πιστεύεται εἰς δικαιοσύνην, στόµατι δὲ ὁµολογεῖται εἰς σωτηρίαν.

In this verse Paul gives the correct chronological sequence of salvation namely faith in Christ followed by Jewish worship involving public confession.  Paul reverses the order to show the Jews that ritual without salvation is meaningless.  The Jew must believe in the Lord Jesus Christ first, and then he may participate in ritual-worship of the Lord for example in quoting Deuteronomy 6:4.

Conclusion of this passage:

Many ministers misunderstand this passage.  They think that this passage provides the correct procedure for evangelizing gentile unbelievers.  They fail to realize that Paul is explaining the gospel to his Jewish brethren.

From false exegesis and analysis comes false interpretation; from false interpretation comes false teaching and application.  The “altar call,” that is inviting the unbeliever to come forward in a worship service is a false application of this verse.

Some churches invite many unbelievers to their worship service. The pastor then stirs and whips these unbelievers into a high state of emotion where the unbeliever is no longer thinking, but emoting. Then the pastor implores them to come forward to make a public confession regarding Jesus Christ. So, the unbelievers come forward weeping, wailing and confessing that Jesus is Lord. This is not salvation, but emotional nonsense. Both Moses (Deuteronomy) and Paul have told us that salvation is a mental process.

Christians should give the unbeliever information about the Lord Jesus Christ and his work on the cross.  Furthermore, the Christian should make the options quite clear to the unbeliever, namely if you believe in Jesus Christ, you will spend eternity with the Lord; if not, you will spend eternity in the Lake of Fire.  The unbeliever needs information that he may be able to make a decision based on facts, not emotion.

Salvation has always been faith alone in Christ alone.  In this passage Paul is explaining the gospel to Jewish unbelievers. They, the unbelieving Jews publicly acknowledged Christ in their ritual along with believing Jews when they quote such passages as Deuteronomy 6:4. Paul is warning these unbelievers that publicly quoting Scripture is not salvation. They must believe in the Lord Jesus Christ if they intend to live with God forever.  Paul has already made salvation very clear in Romans 3.  Then in the tenth chapter, he specifically states that public ritual is not salvation.

A few points for clarification:

1. The function of the soul (the heart, the soulish pump) is thought. Thought must circulate through this pump if one is going to function properly. It must circulate thought throughout the soul just as the heart in the body circulates blood throughout the body. Faith is non-meritorious thinking; it is not blind faith as some might suggest.

2. It is the object which has the merit in the perceptive system of faith. The subject of faith has no merit, only the object of faith gives merit to this system of perception.

3. Believing is a method of thinking. It is not feeling, sincerity, or emotion. As a matter of fact, emotion is not even found in the soul. When you insert emotion into thought you destroy thought. So, believing is a method of thinking, not feeling, not emoting.

4. Righteousness is a reference to the imputed righteousness of God in contrast to self or works righteousness by keeping the Law or any other system of works.

Romans 10:11

Therefore, the Scripture says [Isaiah 28:16], "When anyone believes on Him, they shall not be disappointed."

λέγει γὰρ ἡ γραφή, Πᾶς ὁ πιστεύων ἐπí αὐτῷ οὐ καταισχυνθήσεται.

There is no disappointment in heaven.  The person who believes in Christ will never be disappointed about that decision for it is not only the means of the imputation of God’s perfect righteousness, but also the means of receiving eternal life. In the eternal state, Revelation 21:4 will apply, “and He will wipe away every tear from their eyes [removes all suffering and regret] furthermore, death shall no longer exist; neither shall there any longer be mental anguish [sorrow, sadness, grief], nor crying [a manifestation of all kinds of pain and sadness], nor physical pain; because the first things have [the old order of things has] passed away.”  Revelation 20:6a, “Happy and sanctified [emphasis on ultimate sanctification in one’s resurrection body] is the one who has part in the first resurrection [all believers] . . .”

Romans 10:12

For there is no distinction made between the Jew and the Gentile [literally the Greek]; for the same is Lord of all [of all races] is generous to all those who call upon Him [an expression for believing in Christ];

A few points for clarification:

1.  Salvation is not restricted to any race or any special group of people. Salvation has no restrictions except your own personal volition.

2. The sins of the entire human race were imputed to Christ and judged: the doctrine of unlimited atonement.

3. Therefore, salvation is for all people in the human race without partiality.

4. There is no such thing, therefore, as a handicap regarding salvation.

5. The entire human race receives a fair shake: “Whosoever believes.” Anyone can believe in Christ.

6. Consequently, the only restriction is individual negative volition like the Jewish blasphemy of keeping the Law for salvation.

Romans 10:13

For whoever will call upon the person of the Lord [believe in Him] will be delivered [a quote from Joel 2:32; Jewish believers will be delivered at the 2nd Advent].

Πᾶς γὰρ ὃς ἂν ἐπικαλέσηται τὸ ὄνοµα κυρίου σωθήσεται.

A few points for clarification:

1.  Peter quotes these words on the day of Pentecost in Acts 2:14-23 when he faced the hostile unbelievers of Jerusalem. Acts 2:13, “But other were mocking and saying, “They are full of sweet wine [when the Gift of Languages became operational].” The Jewish unbelievers in Judea were living Cosmic 2. For this reason, the Lord will remove a large segment of these Jewish people in 70 A.D. (the Big Blot-out). Paul anticipates the Big Blot-out of 70 A.D.

2. The only hope for Israel is the Lord Jesus Christ. He is the God of Israel; The Jewish believers are His people. The Lord protected Israel in all of their client nations except when they entered a period of apostasy. Apostasy always precedes the Big Blot-out.

3.  Yet this context indicates that the Jew is not only equivalent but greater in his negative volition toward Christ than the Pharaoh of the Exodus.

4. Amenhotep II who was the Pharaoh of the Exodus was negative toward the Lord in his confrontation with Moses. God even extended his life so that the world would be evangelized via his negative volition. At that time, the Pharaoh set a record for scar tissue of the soul.

5.  The record-holder in every generation of history is always a Jew guilty of the big blot-out (Blot-out is a term used when the majority of the Jewish people are negative toward the gospel). This was true during the Lord’s three-year public ministry, and during the beginning of the Church Age and during Paul’s ministry.

6. When the 1st Advent was prophetical in the Old Testament there were Jews in every generation who blotted out the 1st Advent during which Christ presented himself as Messiah and savior. As a result of this, great historical disaster came to every generation of Jews who lived in the Cosmic System and became a part of a big blot-out.

7. When Christ actually came, that generation actually exceeded all other generations in their accumulation of scar tissue even though they were face to face with Christ, the fulfilment of prophecy.

8. After the cross, the big blot-out continued for 40 years until the 5th cycle of discipline was administered in 70 A.D. Periodically historical disaster overtakes the Jews because of this phenomenon, the big blot-out.

9. Therefore, there is only one hope for the Jew as well as for the Gentile and that is to believe in the Lord Jesus Christ namely to call upon His person as per Joel 2:32 or Acts 2:21; Romans 10:13.

What is the Big Blot-out? Occasionally, in history the Lord as the controller of history has to remove a large segment of the population due to their extreme antagonism toward truth. The removal is called the Big Blot-out, a surgical removal of a cancer from society. The cancer is formed by involvement in Cosmic 2 of the Cosmic System.

Introduction to Satan’s Cosmic System:

Definition

The cosmic system is Satan's strategy as the ruler of this world to control believers as well as unbelievers.  Satan's cosmic system is composed of two separate power spheres namely Cosmic 1 and 2.  Cosmic One is Satan's exploitation of believers and unbelievers through their own arrogance.  Cosmic Two is Satan's propaganda to educate and promote antagonism toward anything related to God, His word or anyone one learning or teaching His word. Cosmic one represents Satan's attitude from the time of his prehistoric fall up to the prehistoric angelic trial. Cosmic Two represents Satan's attitude from the time of Adam's fall in the garden to the end of the Millennium. Cosmic One emphasizes arrogance and subjectivity. Cosmic Two emphasizes antagonism and intolerance toward the plan, purpose, and will of God, as well as toward all Christians executing it.  Thus, Cosmic One is Satan's philosophy in the prehistoric angelic conflict. Cosmic Two is Satan's philosophy in human history as the ruler of this world.

COSMIC ONE:

1. Emphasizes arrogance; preoccupation with self.

2. Target: ego, the self-consciousness of the soul.

3. Results in preoccupation and obsession with self to the exclusion of God and man.

4. Emphasizes self in contrast to God and objective reality.

5. Represents Satan's attitude at the time of his prehistoric fall.

6. Represents Satan's philosophy in the prehistoric angelic conflict when he was obsessed with self in maximum arrogance.

7. The believer in cosmic one assumes the arrogance of Satan at his fall.

8. The believer becomes a slave to self.

 COSMIC TWO:

1. Emphasizes animosity, hatred, antagonism toward God and His plan.

2. Target: truth or doctrine.

3. Results in antagonism toward Christ as the living Word and doctrine as the written Word.

4. Stresses human viewpoint over Divine viewpoint.

5. Represents Satan's attitude from the time of man's historical fall to the end of human history.

6. Represents Satan's philosophy as ruler of this world after the fall of man. Now he is obsessed with destroying the plan of God as the #1 enemy of the plan of God.

7. The believer or the unbeliever in Cosmic Two becomes inculcated with the antagonism of Satan which antagonism began at the fall of the human history.

8. The believer or unbeliever becomes a slave to Satan.

Ephesians 2:2, "in which sphere [in spiritual death] you formerly walked [as an unbeliever] according to the lifestyle of this cosmos [Satan’s cosmic system], according to the ruler of the power of the air, the spirit [Satan] who is now operational [working via Cosmic 1 & 2] in the sons of disobedience [believers not executing the spiritual life]."

The religious Jews who lived during Christ’s 1st Advent did not understand Christ since they rejected revelation from God. Certainly today, cosmic unbelievers and cosmic Christians cannot understand the Christian who is advancing in the spiritual life and executing God’s plan though a Christian can understand those in Satan’s Cosmic System through the Word of God. In this study we will only deal with Cosmic Two since that system deals with antagonism. Antagonism which Jesus, Peter, Paul etc. faced during their ministries.

DOCTRINE OF COSMIC TWO:  THE ANTAGONISM COMPLEX

Introduction: The doctrine of cosmic two deals with the subject of quenching the Holy Spirit. 1 Thessalonians 5:19 says, "Do not quench the Spirit." Cosmic two is the function of the believer in apostasy under the principle of antagonism. The gates of cosmic two are antagonistic not only toward Bible doctrine, but also toward the protocol plan of God in general and anything related to God, including the laws of divine establishment.

Gate 1: Motivational Antagonism toward Bible Doctrine and the Protocol Plan of God: The Old Sin Nature as the agent.

We have a built-in system of antagonism toward God namely the sin nature. The old sin nature is the primary source of temptation in life. But more than that, it represents the corruption of the cell structure of the body through our relationship with Adam. (There are two general categories of temptation in life: Inner temptation from the old sin nature, outside temptation from people, and situations or circumstances of life. However, there is only one source of sin:  human volition. To be tempted is not sinful or evil, but to succumb to the temptation by utilizing your own volition in doing whatever the temptation suggests becomes the basis for sin. Therefore, the guardian of the human soul is human volition.) The old sin nature occupies every cell of the human body, except the twenty-three chromosomes of the female ovum. The old sin nature residing in the body is the major source of temptation directed toward the volition of the soul.

We must take responsibility for our sins. When we succumb to temptation due to negative volition, the old sin nature takes control our soul and the believer is then carnal. We remain in this position until we use the recovery procedure.  At which time the Holy Spirit regains control of our soul. Every day, we make constant decisions for either the old sin nature or the Holy Spirit. Even when we sin in ignorance, we still wanted to do it, and so, we are responsible for that decision. Our volition gave the go-ahead to that temptation to sin, and so as far as God is concerned, we are guilty. There are two categories of sin from human volition: The sins of cognizance in which volition is aware that a sin is committed, and the sins of ignorance in which volition made the decision to sin but was unaware that it was a sin. Both categories of sin make us equally guilty before the Lord and, as believers, antagonistic toward God's plan.  Since volition wanted to and did commit the sin, whether in ignorance or cognizance, the individual is responsible for all of his sins. (Some of these statements may also be applied to the unbeliever.)

There are three characteristics which form the essence of the old sin nature, Satan’s inside agent: An area of weakness, an area of strength and the lust pattern. There is variation in temptations and sins from these two different areas and the lust pattern among people that we cannot measure our spiritual advance by comparing ourselves with others.  First, there is an area of weakness which tempts us regarding our brand of sin. Secondly, there is an area of strength which tempts in the areas of human good and moral degeneration for example you might say, “I would never get drunk like that drunken bum,” or “How could anyone steal a hymnal,” after hearing of a stolen hymnal. From this comes a strong tendency toward self- righteousness, and a holier-than-thou attitude. This is being neither devout nor pious, but simply functioning in another area of the old sin nature. Third, there is the lust pattern which tempts us in certain fields, such as lust for money, sex, chemical stimulation, power, approbation, lust for revenge and even killer lust. Understanding the essence of the sin nature helps to understand Satan’s inside agent.

God has provided human volition as a defense against temptation related to sin, human good, and evil (a few examples of evil: socialism providing the welfare state, redistribution of wealth, the destruction of privacy, freedom and property etc., and socialism evolving into Marxism). Human volition guards the gate of the soul against the pressure of temptation. Through temptation, the old sin nature is constantly seeking to gain control over our soul. Therefore, the soul of every believer is a battleground as long as he lives. The old sin nature has no power beyond temptation, so we are responsible for all of our sins.

The absolute status quo of every believer falls into two categories. The believer is either living the spiritual life in God’s protocol plan where he is said to be filled with the Spirit, or he is living in the cosmic system.  In cosmic one he is grieving the Holy Spirit, and in cosmic two he is quenching the Holy Spirit. Therefore, spirituality and carnality are absolutes; you are either completely spiritual or completely carnal. No matter what your stage of spiritual growth, you are either controlled by the Spirit or by the old sin nature. Spirituality and carnality are mutually exclusive. You can be spiritual as a baby believer; you can be spiritual as a mature believer. You can be carnal as a baby believer; you can be carnal as a mature believer. The relative status quo of every believer is his spiritual growth or retrogression.  As a new believer we begin as a baby, moves into adolescence, and eventually advances to spiritual adulthood in three categories; or he can retrogress through the eight stages of reversionism known as backsliding. You are either a winner or loser at any given point in your spiritual life.

The use of Rebound namely the Recovery Procedure is a grace decision by which we get out of carnality and the cosmic system. We get into the cosmic system through sin; we get out through naming that sin as a priestly function.  Believers who never learn the Recovery Procedure live their entire life in Cosmic 1 and 2. There is no way you can execute God's game plan on your ability; it can be executed only through grace. In grace, God does the work and man is the beneficiary apart from his merit.

Under the authority and power of the Holy Spirit, the believer does not sin.  When he decides to use his volition to sin, that decision removes him from the authority and power of the Holy Spirit. If the believer remains out of fellowship for a prolonged period of time, he will become demonized via blackout and scar tissue of the soul (Ephesians 4:17, 18). The old sin nature, gate one is the system by which we, as believers, give our own personal consent to demonization. It is also the gate in which the unbeliever begins to give consent in two categories: demon influence and demon possession.  So, the old sin nature is the snare that gets a person into the cosmic system, but he still has free will to escape through the use of the Recovery Procedure.

Gate 2:  Negative Volition.

Cosmic one and Cosmic two both have negative volition-gates. The negative volition gate of each cosmic system emphasizes the basic difference between the two systems. Negative volition in cosmic one always results from arrogance and preoccupation with self but does not necessarily indicate antagonism toward Bible doctrine. Negative volition in cosmic two is the direct result of hostility toward the Word of God or toward the one who communicates it. Gate 2 of Cosmic One can be described as indifference to doctrine or having wrong priorities; both come from arrogance. Gate 2 of Cosmic Two can be described as open antagonism toward the teaching of doctrine and the one who communicates it.

All negative volition in the human race can be classified as rejection or antagonism toward truth in one or more of the three categories of truth which are as follows: The laws of divine establishment for believer and unbeliever. The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ for unbelievers, and Bible doctrine for believers in Jesus Christ. When a person rejects truth whether he be unbeliever or believer, he will enter into the Eight Stages of Reversionism. The first sign of this is social degeneration or anti-establishment which is gate 3 of cosmic two.

Gate 3: Anti-establishment.

The Laws of Divine Establishment are for both believer and unbeliever which laws balance freedom with authority and permit evangelism, Bible teaching and missionary activity.  Freedom without authority is anarchy; authority without freedom is tyranny. The move toward anti-establishment begins when the unbeliever rejects the gospel. Though the unbeliever may have been very pro establishment, once he rejects the gospel, he will move in the direction of anti-establishment. Once a person rejects the kernel of truth namely the gospel, he will begin vacuuming in the lie into his soul anti-establishment thinking and every other untruth. The unbeliever involved in anti-establishment is described in Romans 1:26-32, “For this reason God [the function of the Supreme Court of Heaven] he delivered them over to shameful lusts [turned them over to their sin natures]; even their own women exchanged their natural sexual function for that which is unnatural [lesbianism], (27) and in the same way also the men abandoned the natural sexual function with a woman and were inflamed with their lusts toward one another [homosexuality], men with other men committing the shameful deed [homosexuality: indecent acts] and receive in themselves the due penalty of their perversion [many plagues in history]. (28) And just as they did not see fit to have God in their knowledge any longer [negative volition at God-consciousness], God delivered them over to a depraved mind to do the things that are not proper, (29) being filled with all unrighteousness, greed, malice, full of jealousy, murder, dissension, deceit, evil motivation; they became gossips, (30) slanderers, haters of God, insolent, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, (31) without understanding, lacking honor and integrity, unloving [no capacity for love], implacable. (32) And although they know the righteous decree of God, that those who practice such things deserve death [capital punishment], they not only continue to do these very things, but also they approve of others who practice them." The believer involved in rejecting truth is described in 2 Timothy 3:2-7.  "For persons [Church Age believers] will be lovers of self [cosmic one], lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, wicked, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self- control, brutal [emotion bringing about the irrational person: unreasonable, cruel, savage, violent, and inhuman], haters of good [of intrinsic value], treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having an overt appearance of the spiritual life [the hypocrisy of legalism; the distraction of emotionalism], but they have denied its power [the two power options of the spiritual life]. Therefore, avoid these believers [who are anti-establishment and anti-protocol plan of God], for among these are those who worm their way into homes [to commit sexual sins] and captivate silly [weak] women who are loaded down with sins [full of arrogance] and swayed by all kinds of evil desires [no control over the lust pattern of the sin nature], always learning [academic understanding of certain Biblical truths, but no metabolization of that truth] but never able to come to the epignosis knowledge of the truth."

 Gate 4: Cosmic Panaceas.

By definition, a panacea is a cure-all; a simple, stupid, disastrous solution from the tunnel vision anti-establishment function or the substitution of legalism or emotionalism for the spiritual life. The unbeliever who rejects truth starting with the gospel and the believer who rejects the spiritual life will substitutes cosmic panaceas. This gate is that function of seeking solutions to the problems of life apart from truth in its three categories: the Laws of Divine Establishment, the gospel of salvation, and accurate Bible teaching and doctrine. Human viewpoint solutions to the problems of life are no substitute for divine solutions.

Laws may guarantee equal opportunity, but no sane government would attempt to provide equality such as in mental health, mental ability, strength, motivation, love ad nauseam, but they try to make us all equal economically which include such things as taxing the rich to feed the poor, i.e., the redistribution of wealth, the break-up of successful business enterprises, the confiscation of property, the nationalization of industry, and the passing of laws to suit or conform to this false doctrine of equality.

Cosmic panaceas inevitably result in big government, fat with bureaucrats and people with less and less freedom in terms of rights, privacy and property. Cosmic panaceas advocate the criterion that make people slaves to the state instead of the government being the servant of the people. Cosmic panaceas are based on self-righteous arrogance and so promise all sorts of things that cannot be fulfilled. In their divorcement from reality, they advocate equality for all via taxing the rich not only to feed the poor but to raise the standard of living for the poor via the redistribution of wealth. Those involved in cosmic panaceas promote the breaking-up of successful business enterprises, the confiscation of property, the nationalization of industry, and the passing of laws to suit or conform to this false doctrine of equality. Both authority and freedom are sacrificed on the altar of equality.

No government or personal interest group can create equality in the human race. Only God can create equality, which He has done with the Baptism of the Holy Spirit at the point of salvation. So, a myth is destroyed. Equal opportunity is not equality. In fact, equal opportunity guarantees inequality, as demonstrated in both the temporal and spiritual realm. By creating equal opportunity in the protocol plan of God, God has guaranteed that in heaven there will be great inequality. There are always some people who use their equal opportunity, and some who do not.

In the name of the greater good for the greater number, the government commits crimes, sets itself above the law, and therefore destroys the laws which protect our freedom, privacy, property and lives. Socialism and Marxism are anti-freedom and anti-God, though many Christian organizations advocate their false doctrines and try to merge them with Christian doctrine. Without freedom, the individual cannot have a destiny. Without authority or establishment, one cannot have freedom.

Cosmic panaceas are designed to promote the rule of Satan on earth. He is the ruler of this world in name, but he becomes the ruler in effect through the arrogance of believers and unbelievers who cooperate to help his regime through crusader arrogance and cosmic panaceas. History has demonstrated the failure of cosmic panaceas in the devil's world. Crusader arrogance and its resultant cosmic panaceas add up to a false premise, and there is no solution to life based on a false premise or a false conclusion.

Gate 5:  Cosmic Degeneration.

Degeneration is defined here as deterioration or retrogression of the person who constantly lives in Satan's cosmic system. They deteriorate or retrogress by going from one category of degeneration to another.  Basically, degeneration means to become worse. Under cosmic degeneration, the standards and modus operandi of the person whether believer or unbeliever who lives in the cosmic system declines. Hence, degeneration in the cosmic system is a process of deterioration, passing from a higher to a lower status quo.

There are two categories of cosmic degeneration namely immoral degeneration which is obvious, and moral degeneration which is not so obvious. To understand this, let’s look briefly at the Sin Nature which has both an area of weakness, an area of strength, lust pattern and trends. This results in a diversity of sins, failures, and flaws. When the person prolongs his residence in the cosmic system, he begins to deteriorate soulishly by moving toward his area of weakness which can be immoral or moral degradation. Therefore, a prolonged stay in the cosmic system can result in either immoral or moral degeneration.

Immoral degeneration includes such things as crime, violence, sexual perversion, and drug addiction. All of this goes back to a basic rejection of authority in the home and at God-consciousness (awareness). Romans 1:24-27 describes such a person who rejects God at awareness. "Therefore, God delivered them over to the lusts of their right lobes to an immoral status [through black-out of the soul], that their bodies might be degraded among themselves; they who exchanged the doctrine from God for a lie. They both worship and serve the creature [Satan] rather than the Creator [the Lord] who is blessed forever. Because of this, God has delivered them over to the passions of dishonor [or shameful passions namely immoral degeneracy].  For not only their women exchanged the normal function of sex for that which is contrary to nature [lesbianism], but also in the same manner, the men abandoned their natural relationship with women [homosexuality] and became inflamed with their lust for one another, males with males, accomplishing the perverted act of homosexuality, and received in themselves the judgment of their perversion which was inevitable."  When the believer becomes morally degenerate, his friends may hale him as a great believer. If however, he should become immorally degenerate, he will probably shock himself and often concludes that he is not saved though he is. Nevertheless, these things occur among believers every day. Abraham committed adultery with the Egyptian, Hagar; David committed adultery with the Jewish Bathsheba, and then murdered her gentile husband, an honorable believer and a general in David’s army. Paul mentions a partial list of sins that were prevalent among the Galatian Christians in Galatians 5:19, “Now, the works of the flesh [sin nature] are plainly seen such as [a representative list] fornication [pornea: including adultery], mental defilement from wrong doing [1 Thessalonians 2:3; Matthew 23:27] and sexual sins related to abnormality and criminality, licentious behavior [the Greek word aselgeia: extreme indulgence in sensual pleasure related to alcohol, drugs and sex including sexual sins related to idolatry and human sacrifice].” The born-again believer in the cosmic system is far worse generally than the degenerate unbeliever, because the believer must go through far more systems of resistance to do what he does. Consequently, the worst people on the face of the earth are degenerate believers.

God's view and inevitable judgment of homosexuality is memorialized in the Dead Sea. Inevitably, God must judge all forms of immoral degeneracy and eliminate such people from humankind for the preservation of mankind. For one of the greatest dangers related to the destruction of mankind is immoral degeneracy, not nuclear weapons. Though, man has the potential for self-destruction, God keeps immoral degeneracy in check through judgment. The punishment for immoral degeneracy is related to two categories of suffering: The law of volitional responsibility, Galatians 6:7, “Do not be deceived. God is not mocked for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap,” and divine judgment administered from the justice of God for example the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah.

Much more subtle is moral degeneracy which often passes for spirituality among believers who are ignorant of good Bible teaching. Moral degeneracy can be classified as uncontrolled and unrestrained legalism. Prolonged residence in the cosmic system results in some believers exercising the functions of self-righteous arrogance to the point of violence, destruction of property, and murder. Peter was about to enter into moral degeneracy when Paul nipped it in the bud. Galatians 2:11-13,  "But when Cephas [Peter] came to Antioch, I [Paul] opposed him face to face because he stood condemned [for his legalism and hypocrisy which ultimately lead to moral degeneracy]. Before certain men [legalistic believers] came from James [a legalist for a while], he used to eat with the Gentiles. But when these legalists came, he began to withdraw and to separate himself from the Gentiles because he was afraid of the circumcision-party. Consequently, the rest of the Jews joined Peter in his hypocrisy with the result that even Barnabas was carried away by this hypocrisy." The apostle Paul as an unbeliever, Saul of Tarsus was guilty of moral degeneracy which motivated his persecution of Christians.  Acts 8:3, "But Saul began ravaging the church, entering house after house. He would drag off both men and women and put them in prison." Because of the function of moral degeneracy in his pre-salvation days, the apostle Paul, the greatest Christian of all, states in 1 Timothy 1:15 by way of retrospective exposition, "It is a trustworthy statement [true deposition] deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, among whom I am the worst." So, Paul ranked himself as the worst sinner who ever lived not because of immorality for Paul wasn’t immoral, but because of his moral degeneracy for he was the most self-righteous person who has ever lived. There was no one in his league. So, the worst sinner who ever lived, Saul of Tarsus, was a very moral, self-righteous person, a strong adherent to the legalistic distortion of the Mosaic Law. Born-again believers through prolonged residence in the cosmic system can also become involved in moral degeneracy. The Galatian believers were guilty of such degeneracy which came from their keeping the Mosaic Law for spirituality. This is described as their problem in Galatians 3:1-3, “You foolish Galatians, who has hypnotized you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified? This is the only thing I want to find out from you: did you receive the Spirit by the works of the Law, or by hearing of faith? Are you so stupid? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being brought to completion [in the spiritual life] by the flesh [functioning out of fellowship under the legalism of the Judaizers]?”

Moral degeneracy often leads to false doctrines, such as sinless perfection.  1 John 1:8, "If we allege that we do not have a sin nature, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth [Bible doctrine] is not in us." Now skip verse 9 and go to verse 10, “If we allege that we have not sinned [usually from [point of our salvation up to the point of the allegation], we make Him a liar and His word is not in us [in our soul in the form of metabolized truth]” Moral degeneracy is characterized by self-deceit combined with ignorance and/or rejection of doctrine. Moral degeneracy had become an evil influence in the Colossian church, as stated in Colossians 2:16-18, "Therefore, let no one act as your judge in regard to the food that you eat or what you drink or with regard to any religious day or the observance of the new moon celebration or a Sabbath day. (17) These are shadows that were to come. The reality, however, is found in Christ. (18) Do not let anyone who delights in false humility, even the worship of angels, defraud you or disqualify you from your prize [escrow blessings]. Such a person [believer in moral degeneracy] takes his stand on alleged visions and his non-spiritual mind inflates with idle notions."  This is an excellent description of self-righteous arrogance which includes the arrogance of legalism, personality arrogance, authority arrogance, crusader arrogance, and the arrogance of Christian service (works).

Gate 6: Demonism.

1. There are four categories of fallen angels, three of which are incarcerated and one group which is operational. The incarcerated ones are found in the Abyss as per Revelation 9:1-11, in Tartarus as per 2 Peter 2:4 and under the Euphrates River as per Revelation 9:14-15. The fallen angels which are operational function under the rule of Satan during human history.

2.  There are two categories of demon activity in human history namely demon influence and demon possession. Demon influence is Satan’s thinking entering the soul of the believer or unbeliever through the concept of black-out of the soul.  When there is insufficient truth or a lack of truth in the soul, the person will accept the lies of Satan.  Demon possession is a demon indwelling the body of an unbeliever only. Since the believer is indwelt by God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit, no demon can indwell the body of a believer.

3.  For either demon influence or possession to occur, the person must be in the cosmic system. There cannot be demon influence or possession apart from human consent, which requires decisions made from a position of weakness (one controlled by his sin nature). The believer is in a position of weakness and will be demonized when he is functioning out of fellowship with the Spirit. The unbeliever is in a position of weakness when he rejects the Laws of Establishment and will be demonized and in some cases can be demon possessed.

4.  Demons are capable of two categories of violence namely indirect and direct. In indirect violence, the demon must attack either through demon influence or demon possession. Much more common today is demon influence which is the source of most of the violence we face motivated by hatred, anger, criminal activity, and terrorism. Direct violence is a phenomenon reserved for the last half of the Tribulation. The demon attacking force includes the three angelic assault armies.  (1) The attack of the first demon assault army stationed in the Abyss, Revelation 9:1-11. (2) The attack of the second demon assault army stationed under the Euphrates River, Revelation 9:14-19. (3) The attack of the third demon assault army stationed in heaven under the direct command of Satan, Revelation 12:7-9, and Satan’s attack at the end of the Millennium called Gog and Magog, Revelation 20:7-10.

5.  Believers and unbelievers in the cosmic system during the Tribulation are victims of violence from demon assault armies. Satan's rationale in torturing and destroying his human servants is that once he is cast to the earth, he doesn’t need them anymore. This is a case of finesse judgment, where God uses evil to judge evil (Revelation 9:4, 5, 18). Satan destroys his own losers in the cosmic system. So also, people involved in demonism have no loyalty or integrity. The arrogance of the cosmic system cancels integrity, honor, and virtue.

6. Choose between living in God’s system or Satan’s. Every day, thousands of believers living in the cosmic system make hundreds of thousands of decisions from a position of weakness. These decisions reflect the cosmic philosophy of Satan. Once decisions are made from free will to live in Satan’s cosmic system, the person loses his ability to make decisions from a position of strength. All decisions made under the influence of arrogance and in the cosmic system are decisions from a position of weakness. All decisions made from the Filling of the Spirit and application of Bible doctrine are decisions made from a position of strength.

7. You make decisions all the time and they will eventuate in a trend. They are either from a position of weakness which leads to a self-destructive trend or from a position of strength leading to an upward trend of spiritual growth and virtue.

Gate 7:  Religion.

Christianity and religion are antithetical. In Christianity, God saves mankind through personal faith in Jesus Christ. In religion, man seeks to impress God with his works. Religion can be classified as the devil's ace trump since it blinds so many people. Satan invented religion to counterfeit God's plan, purpose, and will for mankind, namely to blind the unbeliever from the gospel and to divert the believer from the execution of the protocol plan of God. Religion is part of the devil's strategy in being "like the Most-High God," as stated in Isaiah 14:14. Christianity is not a religion, but an eternal relationship with God through personal faith in Christ. In religion, Homo sapiens seek the approbation of God through good deeds, human merit, and various categories of works. Religion reflects the evil genius of Satan, whereas Christianity represents the perfect integrity of God combined with His grace policy.

For deceit and error to be carried out effectively, Satan has devised a system of counterfeits which are the counterfeits of religion such as:

1. Gospel: 2 Corinthians 4:3-4, “And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing. The god of this age [Satan] has blinded the minds of unbelievers [through religion, philosophy etc.], so that they cannot see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.”

2. Ministers: 2 Corinthians 11:13-15, “For such ones are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. (14) Did not even Satan marvelously transform himself into an angel of light? (15) Therefore, it is no great thing if his ministers also transform themselves as ministers of righteousness, whose end shall be according to their works.”

3. Communion table: 1 Corinthians 10:19-21, “What do I mean then? That a thing sacrificed to idols is anything or that an idol is anything? (20), No, I say that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons, and not to God, and I do not desire you to become fellow worshippers with demons. (21) You cannot drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons; you cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons.”

4. Doctrine: 1 Timothy 4:1, “But the Spirit [the Holy Spirit is the teacher of Bible doctrine] explicitly teaches that in latter periods of time [between the 1st and 2nd Advents (Church Age and the Tribulation)] some [believers] will withdraw from doctrine, concentrating on deceitful spirits [false teachers] and doctrines from demons [involvement in Cosmic 1 & 2].”

5. Spirituality: Galatians 3:1-3, “O unthinking Galatians who has hypnotized you [has given you the evil eye]? Before whose eyes [refers to perception, they saw it in their mind’s eye] Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified [was designated clearly: You used to have your eyes on Christ, now you have your eyes on the Mosaic Law]. (2) This only I desire to learn from you: did you receive the Spirit by the works of the Law or by hearing of faith? (3) Are you so stupid [so lacking in thought] that having begun in the sphere of the [Filling of the] Spirit, are you now being brought to completion by the flesh [using human power out of fellowship to advance spiritually]?

6. System of righteousness: Matthew 19:16-22, “Now behold a man came to Him and said, “Teacher, what good shall I do to obtain eternal life?” (17) And He replied to him, “Why do you ask me about what is good [What good shall I do]?  There is only one [Jesus] who is good. If you desire to enter into [eternal] life [through your righteousness], and you do, then keep the commandments [impossible]. (18)  The man inquired, “Which ones?”  Jesus replied, “You shall not murder; you shall not commit adultery; you shall not steal; you shall not bear false witness [in court]; (19) you shall honor your father and mother, and you shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (20) And the young man answered, “All these, I have guarded.  What do I still lack?” (21) And Jesus said to him, “If you desire to be perfect [through works] and you do [though it is impossible], go and sell your possessions and give them to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven then [return] here [after you realize that you are not perfect] and follow Me [in regeneration]. (22) After the young man heard the instruction, he departed grieving for he possessed a lot of property.

7. False gods: All throughout history people have and will worship demons as gods. In the latter half of the Great Tribulation the dictator of the Revived Roman Empire will be worshiped as a god. 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4, “Do not let anyone deceive you in any way since it [the Day of the Lord: the Tribulation and 2nd Advent] will not come unless the departure [Rapture], and the man who is lawless [anti-establishment] shall be revealed, the son of perdition [doomed to destruction], (4) who opposes [the Lord Jesus Christ] and exalts himself above every so called god, or object of worship, so that he is installed in the temple of God [the Jewish temple of the Tribulation], proclaiming himself to be god.”

8. Power (dynamics): 2 Thessalonians 2:8-9, “And then [after the Rapture] the lawless one [dictator of the revived Roman Empire] will be revealed, whom the Lord shall destroy with the breath of His mouth [the least power of God] in fact he shall neutralize him by the very appearance of His coming [2nd Advent], (9) the dictator whose presence [in history] shall be according to the modus operandi of Satan with all power and by means of miracles even wonder miracles of the lie.” Satan promotes him by means of power and miracles.

9. Way of life: Matthew 23:13-36, In this passage, the Pharisees emphasized the external condition of a person and ignored the internal condition. They emphasized taboos and outward morality. They ignored internal sins which made external righteousness a sham. Their outside was clean = morality and taboos, but their inside was filthy = mental sins and lusts.

Religion is Satan's strategy for distracting Homo sapiens from the four categories of truth. First, are the Laws of Divine Establishment as taught in the Mosaic Law. Religion seeks to become the state and once it has the power, it attacks human freedom. Second, is the Gospel of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Religion distorts salvation by grace through faith into many diverse systems of salvation by works, third, the Recovery Procedure is attacked through works, and fourth, the need to grow in grace and in knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ is attacked. Religion substitutes false doctrine (or the "doctrine of demons," 2 Tim 4:1] for truth. Religion sets up a system of works and ritual to replace the protocol plan of God.

Religion motivates and produces, through false teachers, every category of evil, violence, terrorism, and murder to force people into their religion which is not only characterized by the doctrine of demons (2 Timothy 4:1), but it has both false teachers and false prophets to communicate this information.  There are at least five characteristics of false teachers in the Church Age.

1. False teachers are masters of hypocrisy. They use a phony facade, first exposed by our Lord in Matthew 7:15, “Beware (constantly be on your guard) of the false prophets who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves,” and further developed by Paul in Romans 16:18, “For such believers do not serve our Lord Christ, but their own emotions, and by their smooth and flattering speech they deceive the right lobes of the unsuspecting [those ignorant of truth].” Behind a public relations facade, false teachers use legalism to convert their victims to religion, Galatians 4:17-18, “They [Judaizers] zealously affect [seek or woo] you [into legalism], not commendably [not honestly] but they wish to exclude you [this means they wish to separate you from me, so that I can’t woo you with grace] in order that you might affect [court or woo] them. (18) But it is good always to be properly courted [by good Bible teachers] in an honorable manner, and not only when I am present with you.”

2. False Teachers flatter their victim, making them feel wanted which flattery appeals to the victim’s pride. 2 Timothy 3:5-7 “Holding to a superficial form [outward appearance] of the spiritual life, but they themselves have disregarded its power; avoid such ones as these. (6) For among them are those [immoral Christian men] who creep into homes [slyly enter the homes] and seduce [captivate] silly women [morally weak women because there is no doctrine in their souls] who are overwhelmed by their sins and are carried away by various lusts. (7) Always learning, but they are never able to come to a metabolized knowledge [the Greek word is epignosis] of the truth.”

3. False teachers promote idolatry as a part of the devil's communion table, Habakkuk 2:18-19, “What profit is the idol when its maker has carved it, or an image, a teacher of falsehood?  For its maker trusts in his own handiwork when he fashions speechless idols. (19) Woe to him who says to a piece of wood, ‘Awake!’ To a mute stone, ‘Arise!’ And that is your teacher? Behold it is overlaid with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all inside it.” 1 Corinthians 10:19-22, “What do I mean then? That a thing sacrificed to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything? (20) No, but I say that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to demons and not to God; and I do not want you to become a sharer in demons. (21). You cannot drink the cup of the Lord [the Communion table requires fellowship] and the cup of demons [demon influence: living in the cosmic system]; therefore, you cannot partake of the table of the Lord [the Eucharist for this worship requires the spiritual life] and the table of demons [demon influence].”

4. False teachers promote self-righteousness, to include legalism, personality arrogance, authority arrogance, crusader arrogance, and works-arrogance, 1 Timothy 1:6-7, “From which some men [pastors] have deviated [apostasy through reversionism]. They themselves have turned aside to ineffective teaching desiring to be teachers of the Law. (7) Since they do not understand either what they are teaching or concerning the things about which they speak dogmatically.”

5. False teachers continue to operate throughout the Church Age, as this is the intensified period of the angelic conflict, 1 John 4:1-6, “Beloved, do not believe every personality, but test the person to see whether they are from God because many false prophets have come out into the world. (2) By this you know the person of God: every person [pneuma] that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God. (3) and every person that does not confess Jesus is from God: this is the person of the antichrist of which you have heard that it is coming and now it is already in the world. (4) You are from God, little children and have overcome them because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world. (5) They are from the world; therefore, they speak as from the world, and the world listens to them. (6). We are from God; he who knows God listens to us; he who is not from God does not listen to us.  By this we know the person of truth and the person of error.”

Gate 8:  Evil as Satan's Policy.

Evil, both motivational and functional is the policy of Satan as the ruler of this world. The power of Satan is administered to the human race via the cosmic system. Evil is the ultimate expression of man's relationship with Satan. Evil in the cosmic system provides both the motivation and momentum. In 2 Timothy 3:13, the advance to "more and more evil" is momentum in the cosmic system. Evil comes in two categories namely motivational evil, which originates from false doctrine in the cosmic system, and functional evil, which is the modus operandi and lifestyle within the cosmic system.

While the spiritual life is the place for the function of absolute good, Satan's Cosmic System is the place for the function of absolute evil. In the protocol plan of God, good and evil are mutually exclusive. This means that no evil exists in the spiritual life under the Spirit, and no good exists in the Cosmic System. Under the authority of God the Holy Spirit and metabolized truth, the believer can only produce agathos which is good of intrinsic value. The mandate regarding evil is given to us in Romans 12:21, "Stop being conquered by evil, [consistent living in the Cosmic System] but conquer evil by means of good [functioning under God’s system of power]." Living one’s life under God’s authority is classified as purchasing time which is necessary because of evil as per Ephesians 5:16, "redeeming [purchasing] the time because the days are evil."

The protection of God’s power system and the continuance of evil will continue.  As long as Satan rules the world, evil will continue to be a part of human history. 2 Timothy 3:13, "But evil men, even deceivers, will advance more and more evil, deceiving and being deceived." Bible doctrine protects the believer from Satan's policy of evil. 2 Thessalonians 3:3, "But the Lord is faithful; He will both empower you and protect you from evil." The Lord's Prayer for the Church addressed this subject in John 17:15, when He asked the Father to "guard them from evil."

Gate 9: Anthropocentric Academic Speculation.

2 John 9, "Everyone who advances in knowledge and does not remain in the field of play [the spiritual life] by means of the doctrine of Christ does not have God [fellowship with God]; for he who persists with doctrine, this same one has both the Father and the Son [fellowship with them]." Pseudo-intellectual arrogance is the basis for many believers trying to reconcile philosophical and scientific speculation with Bible doctrine. Hence, the believer involved in this arrogance must choose between the truth of doctrine and the false concepts in the areas of academic speculation. For example, arrogance chooses evolution over creationism as found in Genesis. Psychology and psychiatry blame man's problems on his environment instead of his bad decisions. Many theories in many academic subjects contradict Bible doctrine in such subjects as history, philosophy, geology, economics, political science, etc.

Romans 10:14

Consequently, how shall they [the Gentiles] call on Christ in whom they have not believed?  Furthermore, how shall they believe about whom they have not heard [There is no gospel information being proclaimed]? Furthermore, how shall they hear without someone proclaiming the gospel [the need for a missionary]?

Πῶς οὖν ἐπικαλέσωνται εἰς ὃν οὐκ ἐπίστευσαν; πῶς δὲ πιστεύσωσιν οὗ οὐκ ἤκουσαν; πῶς δὲ ἀκούσωσιν χωρὶς κηρύσσοντος;

In the general context of verses 14 and 15, we have Jewish responsibility as a client nation. Regarding this responsibility, two doctrines must be understood clearly. First, what is a client nation, and secondly, the responsibility of the client nation in sending out qualified missionaries. When the Jews were called to be a client nation to God, they were called by the title “Priest nation to God.” They were brought out to fulfil something in history that had never been fulfilled before. This first client nation had the responsibility to evangelize its own people, teach the Laws of Establishment and the spiritual life to its believers. In addition, they were to send out missionaries. Without truth, nations degenerate very quickly. So, if God decides to revitalize a nation, then he will send to that nation a team of missionaries in order to evangelize, teach and to prepare indigenous young men with the gift of Pastor-teacher. However, if there is no interest in the gospel in a degenerately evil nation, then the Lord can merely allow that nation to self-destruct or use another nation to destroy it.

In verses 14 & 15 there are four rhetorical questions designed to present vital information about all client nations, not just Israel in the past. The first question deals with the problem of no gospel hearing among certain nations. Each subsequent question answers the previous one.

Romans 10:15

Finally, how shall they [missionaries from a Client Nation] proclaim the Gospel unless they are sent out?  Just as it stands written [Isaiah 52:7], "How beautiful [pleasant] are the feet [the means of travel for missionaries at that time] of those who proclaim the good news [the Gospel followed by the teaching of the spiritual life] about intrinsic good things [The Four Spiritual Mechanics].

πῶς δὲ κηρύξωσιν ἐὰν µὴ ἀποσταλῶσιν; καθὼς γέγραπται, Ὡς ὡραῖοι οἱ πόδες τῶν εὐαγγελιζοµένων ἀγαθά.

A few points for clarification:

1. If the pastor is a mouth or a voice; the missionary is a foot.

2. The beauty of the messenger’s feet is in the divine guidance and function of a missionary, as well as the content of his message. Furthermore, the feet of the missionary are beautiful to those desiring to hear the good news of the gospel and Bible teaching.

3. The missionary must be sent out from local churches within a client nation. These churches then both support and sustain him on the mission field. Furthermore, the government of a Client Nation should protect the missionaries. Historically, England did a very good job regarding this matter.

4. Missionary function is the responsibility of believers only in a client nation. It takes hundreds and sometimes thousands of believers to support one missionary on a foreign field.

5. When there are too many unbelievers rejecting the gospel, and too many Christians rejecting the spiritual life, the Client Nation is going to malfunction in missionary activity. When that happens, God may bring those who are desiring to hear the gospel in other nations to the Client Nation via border crossings etc.

Romans 10:16

But not all have obeyed the Gospel [believed in Christ] for Isaiah communicates [Isaiah 53:1] "Lord, who has believed our message [presenting the gospel followed by Bible Teaching]?

Ἀλλ’ οὐ πάντες ὑπήκουσαν τῷ εὐαγγελίῳ· Ἠσαΐας γὰρ λέγει, Κύριε, τίς ἐπίστευσεν τῇ ἀκοῇ ἡµῶν;

Many Jews had rejected the gospel message in the time of Isaiah. Furthermore, many Jewish believers were not interested in learning the spiritual life, and so not only was there a failure to send out missionaries, but also the Southern Kingdom came very close to going out under the 5th Cycle of Discipline during the Kingship of Hezekiah.

Disobedience to the gospel is expressed through unbelief or rejection of the Lord Jesus Christ. When you understand something and reject it, you build a layer of scar tissue on the soul, and when you keep rejecting it, you build more layers of scar tissue until you no longer understand what you previously understood. The principle is that the more you reject something the less you understand it. Every act of rejection makes the thing rejected more obscure.

Though many had rejected the truth during the time of Hezekiah, a pivot of great believers did form under the ministry of Isaiah. It was this group of advancing believers that allowed the Lord to destroy the armies of Sennacherib, the Assyrian King (2 Kings 19:35). Apart from this group of advanced believers, the Southern Kingdom would have gone out under the 5th Cycle of Discipline at that time.

Romans 10:17

Consequently, that faith [in Jesus Christ] comes from hearing [the Gospel-message], moreover that message comes through the doctrinal discourse about Christ [witnessing by an evangelist, missionary, pastor-teacher or any other believer].

ἄρα ἡ πίστις ἐξ ἀκοῆς, ἡ δὲ ἀκοὴ διὰ ῥήµατος Χριστοῦ.

The great issue in evangelism is to give the unbeliever accurate gospel information. The one evangelizing is not to attempt to persuade the unbeliever for that is the responsibility of the Spirit; He is not to plead emotionally, just present the facts pertaining to the gospel. The unbeliever must have correct information regarding the person and the work of the Lord Jesus Christ before he can believe.

In evangelism, one must not make an issue out of personal sins. Remember that the gospel means the presentation of good news, not bad news. The good news is that Jesus was judged for every sin ever committed in the human race. The unbeliever can have eternal life, not by renouncing sin but by believing in Christ. Christ is the issue, not giving up sins. The gospel is good news not bad!

There must be an evangelist, a pastor, an individual believer, or a missionary from a client nation to communicate the gospel to those who have positive volition at God-consciousness (awareness) and at gospel hearing. Therefore, to reach people in foreign countries with the gospel usually a missionary is sent out from the client nation.

Romans 10:18

But, I say, indeed they have not heard [the subjunctive of emphatic negation], have they? Indeed, they have. Their voice [the voice of evangelism] has gone out [all those who wanted to hear, have been evangelized] unto the entire earth, and their communicative words to the ends of the inhabited earth.

The integrity of God ensures that the world will be evangelized in every generation, but not all will ever be converted for the integrity of God does not guarantee worldwide conversion. Furthermore, the Lord is not responsible to provide gospel information to a person if that person has already rejected Him at God-consciousness. Learn to distinguish between evangelization of the world and the conversion of the entire world. Evangelization of the world is a legitimate biblical doctrine; the conversion of the entire world is a heresy, the heresy of post-millennialism.

The Old Testament documentation is taken from Psalm 19:1-4, “The heavens are telling the glory of God, [Why? So that people can become aware of God via God-consciousness.] and the firmament [around the earth] is declaring the work of his hands. [In other words, you can study the firmament and come to the conclusion that there is order and design which demands a designer and creator.] (2) Day to day pours forth speech. [Words are formed in the mind to make thought which is expressed in speech. Each day when you learn a little more about life you come closer to realizing that all of this could not just have happened. You come to the conclusion that behind it all is a God.] Night unto night shows knowledge. [By studying the stars and the universe it brings one to the same conclusion.] (3) There is no speech, nor are there words, their voice is not heard. [The universe which teaches the reality of the Creator, the reality of God, does not actually speak to you; rather you come to this conclusion through your own function of reason.] (4) But their sound has gone out through all the earth, and their utterance to the ends of the world.” [Once a person desires to know God, the sound of the gospel goes out through all the earth to answer this desire. Even though the believers of a client nation should fail in their responsibility to evangelize, God will use other means of getting the gospel message out for a perfect God with perfect integrity cannot ever fail.]

Though the Jews had the perfect spiritual heritage, a complete and total revelation, most failed. On the other hand, though the Gentiles were minus this great spiritual heritage, many had positive volition at God-consciousness. Therefore, God provided the gospel for these gentiles like Cyrus the Great and one or two generations of the Assyrians, sometimes through a Jewish missionary, like Jonah who evangelized the Assyrians, but more frequently through other means.

Conclusion:

1.  This answers the question namely were the gentiles evangelized in the Old Testament. This verse states clearly that never has there been a generation in history which has not been evangelized.

2.  God knew in eternity past the soul of every person in history. He knew of every person who desired to know Him at God-consciousness and so God made provision in the Divine Decree for that person to hear the gospel at just the right time.

3. Therefore, every human being in history will be without excuse at the great White Throne Judgement whether he be Jew or Gentile.

4.  When Christ was on the cross, every sin in the human race was imputed to Him for judgment. Since all sins were judged on the cross, there is no such thing as a person who was overlooked.

Romans 10:19

But I say, did Israel fail to understand? No! [They all understood.] First witness, Moses speaks [Deuteronomy 32:21] "I will make you jealous over that which is not a client nation [Gentile nations in the Old Testament like Assyria for a couple of generations and the Persian Empire would be examples.], over a nation without understanding [a nation without any spiritual heritage] I will make you angry."

Deuteronomy 32:21, “They [the Jews in every generation] have made me [God] jealous [an anthropopathism] with what is not God [something that is not God--idols]; they have provoked me [Jesus Christ, the God of Israel] to anger [anthropopathism] with their idols. So, I will make them [the Jews] jealous with those who are not a people [the Gentiles were not God’s people]; I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation [Any nation without truth is foolish. However, many Gentile nations in history will become great by seeking truth first in the form of the gospel and then in learning the spiritual life and so will become client nations to God].”

Paul quoting from Deuteronomy 32:21 continues his rhetorical debater’s technique. In other words, there never was a Jew in the Old Testament who didn’t know the gospel by the time he was five years old since he had a clear picture of the gospel by watching the ritual and hearing the explanation. They knew, and then they said either yes or no. In this verse and in the previous one, Paul uses the debater’s question to enter a plea on behalf of Israel. In each case the plea is refuted by the facts. In the previous verse Paul enters a plea about hearing the gospel, and in this verse about understanding what they heard. In each case the plea is refuted by the evidence.

Every Jew in every generation of Israel’s history, from the Exodus to A.D. 70, understood the gospel at a very early age. Not only did they understand it, but in many cases, they said no to what they understood, and the more times they said no the more scar tissue they put on their souls. What started out to be clear became abstruse by the building of scar tissue.

The Jews could not say they did not understand the gospel because they did understand it; it was very clear to them. So, Israel was without excuse. Paul now turns to the two greatest witnesses in Jewish history, Moses and Isaiah, and in effect Paul calls Moses and Isaiah to the witness stand to answer the debater’s question about Israel’s hearing of the gospel and Israel’s understanding of the gospel. Moses is called to the witness stand to give evidence of Jewish jealousy over Gentile salvation as per Deuteronomy 32:21. Then in the next two verses Isaiah’s testimony is entered as evidence that Israel understood the gospel which they rejected under the function of the big blot-out.

A few more points for clarification:

1. These fulfilments include the great inversion in which saved Gentiles are blessed by God while unsaved Jews are disciplined by God.

2. When a large segment of a people rejects God, a blot-out occurs, a great historical disaster like the holocaust and the terrible things that happened in the Inquisition, etc.

3. Israel, to be replaced by a nation without the Word of God, by Persia, SPQR, the Franks, etc. has aroused the indignation of the great people of Israel.

Romans 10:20

Next witness Isaiah is so bold [moral courage] as to say, [Isaiah 65:1] "I [Jesus Christ, the God of Israel] was found by those [gentiles] who were not looking for Me [Gentiles, positive at God-consciousness]; I became manifest to those [the gospel was revealed to those Gentiles] who did not ask about Me [They didn’t have the spiritual heritage that the Jews had.].

We have the verb apotolmao (ἀποτολµαω) to describe this witness as not only honest but also very courageous. Some people appear to be courageous at times because they are not thinking in that they do not anticipate a danger and have no imagination regarding a particular danger. However, this word means to have maximum courage without being ignorant, stupid, or being emotional. True courage comes from truth, integrity and humility. This courage comes out in Isaiah’s writing; it is a part of the Word of God, and when it is remembered that his contemporaries were often ready to stone him and eventually, he was sawed in two, his courage can be appreciated.

“Who were not looking for Me:” The present tense is a historical present tense; it views a past event with the vividness of a present occurrence. It refers to Gentiles who did not know how to call upon the person of the Lord Jesus Christ after God-consciousness because they didn’t know about Jesus Christ. They didn’t have the spiritual heritage of the Jews namely the Levitical sacrifices, the sacred articles of furniture which taught Christology, the modus operandi of the Levitical priesthood which gave ritual demonstrations daily of who and what Christ is. They were positive at God-consciousness, but they did not have direction for their positive volition; they didn’t know how to establish a relationship with God. They wanted salvation, but they didn’t know how to obtain it.

“I became manifest to those Gentiles who did not ask about me:” While the Gentiles were positive at God-consciousness they did not know the object of faith for salvation, and therefore Christ had to be revealed to them. This ordinarily would have been the job of the client nation, Israel sending out missionaries but because of their failure under the big blot-out, they did not send out missionaries. Nevertheless, Christ was revealed by other means so that in every generation of the Old Testament, Gentiles believed in Christ with or without Jewish function and cooperation.

A few points for clarification:

1. In all of human history, in every generation from Adam to the present, and from the present to the last generation of the Millennium, God never disregards those seeking Him at God-consciousness. He will always provide gospel information to those desiring to know Him.

2. The conventional method of providing such information is the function of sending out missionaries from a Client Nation, starting with Israel as the first Client Nation to the United States as the present Client Nation that is if we should still hold that envious status.

3. However, if the Client Nation fails in this responsibility, God always has a backup system. God may use merchants who travel internationally, or He may bring those desiring to hear the gospel to the Client Nation etc.

Verse 20 is a quote from Isaiah 65:1 as evidence that the Gentiles understood the gospel without the Law. Verse 21 quotes Isaiah 65:2 as evidence that the Jews understood and rejected the same gospel that the Gentiles understood and accepted.

Romans 10:21

But face to face with Israel He [The Lord Jesus Christ] says, [Isaiah 65:2] "I have extended My hands [intensive evangelism: a desperate appeal to the Jews to believe in Him] the entire day [the dispensation of Israel] face to face with a disobedient [Jews rejecting Jesus Christ as Savior] and obstinate [the Jews in the big blot out] people.

In summary, the two witnesses, Moses and Isaiah, have testified that Israel failed as a client nation. The Jews, instead of using their freedom and their spiritual heritage as found in the Law and through the teaching and warnings of the prophets, they distorted the Law and rejected the accurate teaching of the prophets.
